WEEKEND FUN

Friday evening we gave Nico a bath, put him in his PJs and got in the car...YES we went out! Lol, we went out to Charlie's house and had DINNER and WATCHED a movie: The Social Network. It was a great evening!!! Peter's plan worked wonderfully and Charlie was quite the chef!

Saturday we woke up to beautiful scenes from Key Largo Florida where Peter's parents were doing some wedding reception research for us. Via Skype we toured a lovely place that we think might be the LUCKY SPOT! More info to come...stay tuned!

Afterwards we went for a 20 mile bike ride along the Pacific Ocean...toward Manhattan Beach. It was beautiful. There were parts of the trail that we had big rocks lining the bike path, and just beyond those boulders was cliff and waves crashing...INCREDIBLE.
We stopped at our halfway point to eat some lunch...and little burger/smoothie joint...on the SAND. We hung out with Nico, Walked with him to the water, crawled around with him...and then headed back.

When we got back, Peter and Charlie went SURFING and Nico and Mommy hung out and walked in the hallway. I made a warm shepherd's Pie for the 2 FROZEN surfer dudes, who claimed that their outing went better than before (but they didn't look any better than the other times they've come home from surfing). Peter put on his snow jacket, warmups, socks, and gloves--and admitted that he needed to get a thicker WET SUIT.

Sunday:
Yesterday, We went to Mass and then went to a Sports Bar in Hollywood to watch the Heat Game and then the LAKERS game. At mass, the Monsignor said that he is guilty of being TOO CRITICAL of people. And I must admit that I AM TOO. Peter and I were talking about the fact that we try to hold ourselves to a higher standard and therefore as a result hold those around us to a higher standard as well. When we or those around us don't live up to that, then we are let down, disillusioned, and critical.

By criticizing those around us, we are technically criticizing God's creation. My intention is not to sound all religious with this, I just want to bring up the point that the Church, and other religious entities present as well, that somehow we all FORGET: NOT BE SO MEAN TO EACH OTHER.

The basketball games were a lot of fun. We got to hang out with a High School friend (Belen) who lives out here, Chris Guites. He got to meet Peter and Nico and got to hear the WHOLE STORY. Nico walked around saying hi to all the tables, went up and down the stairs and even took 3 steps by himself. Everyone around me thought I was nuts cause I got so excited when he did it. Peter wasn't watching the game and missed it!

Nico and I both fell asleep in the car on the way home and we kind of just hung out at the house the rest of the evening.

Just another weekend in Southern Cali.

The first 2 little steps!!

Nico still isn't walking on his own but he has been improving and getting stronger EVERYDAY! When the 3 abuelos were in town a couple days ago, he could only walk straight for a little bit with his cart. Now he's going up and down the hallway up to 5 times. We've gone on walks outside with his little cart, he's tried walking up sand dunes on the beach, and he constantly tring to get on his feet for more practice!

Here is a video of him yesterday drunk waddling down our hallway.

Here is the link for those of you who can't see the video!

Just between yesterday and today there has been a HUGE improvement. Today he was able to walk back and forth a couple times and turn in all directions without plopping on the floor ONCE! My baby head is growing so fast...RIGHT BEFORE MY EYES!!!

When Peter got home today, HE TOOK 2 slow wobbly steps ON HIS OWN!!!!!! I love that he waited to impress daddy with his new skills. Between the 2 steps there was a little balancing standing act---then there was another step and PLOP...
It was so exciting!
Tonight was 2 small (baby) steps for Nico, 2 giant steps for Mommy-kind!

St. Monica Catholic Church

Yesterday we biked to a New Church, to check it out...St. Monica Catholic Church, AND REALLY LIKED IT! We even registered.

Granted, it was the children's mass, but there were TONS of kids, Nico's age. He barely paid attention the whole mass since he was mesmerized by the 4 kiddos in the pew behind us.

After mass I did some networking and got some emails about possible teaching positions in the Archdiocese of LA.

Things I liked:
  • The Monsignor was funny and sounded like he really cared about the people in his parish.
  • There was a nice "family" atmosphere.
  • The parishioners all introduced themselves to each other at the beginning of mass-orders of the monsignor.
  • We were within biking distance from our apt!
  • They had DONUTS and COFFEE after mass!!
  • ***they didn't have a 30minute shpeeeal on donating money, actually they didn't even mention it!
On Wednesday they have a meeting for couples interested in getting Married. We got a puzzled look (lol) when we asked the time of the meeting. I then explained that we had our Civil Wedding but not our church wedding yet. A little less confused, they told us that they looked forward to seeing us on Wednesday at 7:15pm!!!
Yes this means that we are actually planning our CHURCH WEDDING NOW!

It was so refreshing and nice to walk-in to that church. I missed that feeling of knowing that the person up there on the alter, representing God, was living out his calling....and was doing his best to share that passion with everyone around.

One the the main things that I took from his homily was:
"You will get more out of life from giving time and love than you will from your new car, your flashy watch, and your latest edition of Prada shoes".
How appropriate for the LA scene, right?....Where everyone name drops with friends, designers, and brands.
I hope that when Nico grows up, he name drops with people lives that he's made a difference in, organizations that he has worked with, and us...his family (whom I hope he grows up to look up to us as role models).

As I was giving him breakfast this morning, I was-again- in awe at how much LOVE I felt inside for this little man. The way he was eating his banana like a BIG BOY....and the way he would tilt his head toward me and wrap his arms around my arm...I could FEEL his love. As he grows up, I want him to share that LOVE with those around him. The world around him is a better place just because he's in it....AT LEAST I know MY WORLD is a gagillion times better now that he's here!

Happy Birthday Miles!!!

Miles, one Nico's friend from Austin, turned 1 yesterday.
Happy Birthday Miles!!!
Hope you had a great day!!!!

Congrats Laurel and Tim on making it through the first year successfully. I see you all had a great time celebrating with Miles' new friends.

Nico asked me to post this for note he wrote to his friend:

1/23/11
Dear Miles,

I am really excited that I get to see you in a couple months, even if it's only for a couple hours! My mom is really excited too! Lots of stuff has happend since we last talked on skype. I hear you are walking? How's that? I've looked into it but I'm not really interested right now...you should see how fast I get to things when I'm crawling!

I've discovered this amazing thing my mom calls sand! It is AWEEEESOMEEE. I mean this is better than warm milk! My mom takes me to play in it all the time and I LOVE IT. When you come visit I'll tell her to take us to it. If you don't have any in malaysia, let me know...I'll have my mom email some to your mom.

Hope we can play with our blocks again soon on skype! I was thinking about you yesterday but didn't have a computer handy to write you this note. Happy 1st birthday dude! Welcome to the club!

Love,
Nico

Gretchen's PEACE CORPS PROJECT

Tomorrow, 2 years ago I OBAMA was inaugurated at President...and I RECEIVED my Peace Corps Invitation to serve in PANAMA! What an awesome day that was!!!

The Peace Corps was an amazing experience for many reasons... one being that I realized the TRUE value of TIME and FRIENDSHIP. My friends here in the US and those in Panama helped me get through the not so easy days and shared the joys of the adventurous ones.

One special lady is Gretchen. We became friends during training and have since been having a Distance relationship. When she found out I was leaving the PC she came to visit me at MY SITE...11 hours on BUS from her site. Then in Miami we met up on Memorial Weekend, where she met Nico for the first time. And about 3 weeks ago, she was here in LA with her boyfriend Myles, also a PC volunteer, and they came to dinner at OUR NEW APARTMENT. It's been great keeping up with my friends in PAMANA through their blogs (gretchen's blog) and emails. I am really proud of the difference they have made with their time there.
This is us during a Chorrera Visit:
From Panama
This was in LA.
When she was here, she told me about a project that she has been working on with some other volunteers. I want to help her raise money for this project and so I asked her to send me a description with the steps on HOW TO DONATE.

Description:
A group of six of us are currently working on a Teacher Training Seminar for Panamanian Elementary School teachers who are now forced to teach English without any English background. We are trying to raise enough money to bring all of our counterparts out to a local city for a week long training with accompanying support materials they will be able to use in their classrooms. This project has taken quite a long time to put together/coordinate and we are all very excited. If you are interested in donating any amount of money at all it will be greatly appreciated.

How to DONATE:
2. On the left-hand-side page guide click on Donate to Volunteer Projects
3. Enter the name Seliga under the space for name or project number. (It is the last name of the volunteer in our group who posted the grant online so our friends and family can donate to our project!) Underneath you will see our short description and more information on how to make a donation.

Feel free to spread the word to friends you think may be interested in making a donation! Thank you all for your support.

Please help my friend Gretchen and the other volunteers that are working hard to make a difference in the lives of the STUDENTS that these teachers who will attend the seminar will impact!

12 month UPDATE

21lbs 11.5 oz
Eating Habits: He likes feeding himself little cubes of fruit, and veggies, and PUFFS. He also recently starting drinking COW's MILK!!!! We are easing him into it so we mix it in with his formula...but he seems to LIKE IT!

Motor Skills: He isn't walking yet. He stands (holding onto things), he walks along the furniture...but no signs of being interested in walking anytime soon, we'll see.
He can do a whole bunch of different "signs". Not the ones you find in baby books like more or thank you....but TOUCHDOWN- he puts his hands in the air; BESITO- he puts his hand over his mouth(and whole face actually) and goes MMMMUUUAAAAAHHHHH; He claps when you say YAYYYY;He waves BYE BYE; and his favorite of all....HE POINTS AT EVERYTHING! He hasn't gotten the memo that pointing is RUDE, lol.

SLeeping Habits: He's adjusted well to our NEW HOME. He had a couple rough nights at the beginning but is consistently sleeping through the night.

Speech: We hear LOTS of baby talk...tingly tingly tingly, diggy diggy diggy, googa googuu--ALL DAY LONG. He even looks at us, tilts his head, points at things and GABBERS his head off about it. It's ADORABLE

Other: He loves playing with sand! Throwing it in the air, crawling really fast without really lifting his has from the ground but gliding them through the sand so as to push sand forward and up all around, he gets super excited when the waves get really close...it makes him laugh and his legs and arms FLAL all around. He continues to be a REALLY FUNNY child- when he laughs, he shows all his little teeth, it's so cute. He also loves hugging his stuffed animals lately.

This year been a whirlwind of adventure. Somedays eternal, some too fast, and we are already here-CELEBRATING the BIG 1. THANK YOU NICO for BEING YOU!! You've brought us sooo much happiness and LOVE!!!!
We LOVE YOU PUMPKIN HEAD!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NICO!!!!

Today was my Pumpkinhead's 1st Birthday!
He got calls from ALL OVER to wish him a Happy Birthday! Its was so nice!!!! Thank you all for remembering!!! You Facebookers, callers, prayer senders, thought senders, emailers.....THANK YOU!!! He had a wonderful choir sing for him from the mountains of Santana in Panama in the morning as we biked to the Santa Monica Farmer's Market.

Then Abuelito Luis arrived from Miami with a whole suitcase of goodies!!!!!!

Twas the night before...

Birthday cake is in the oven, "Seaweed" pasta salad is in the fridge, Blue Jello with Sweedish fish are in there too along with a couple other PIRATY snacks for NICO's ONE YEAR BIRTHDAY PARTY TOMORROW! I can't believe it's been a year since Nico was BORN!
I am so glad that we have this written log of this past year. It's all gone by SOOO FAST, but I'm proud to say that we have been able to capture most of the major events in our 134 blog posts since the announcement of Nico's arrival. We just finished reading Peter's thoughts and My account of the events that took place one year ago tonight (1/15/10 --1:32am Central Time). It's funny how long ago Nico's birth felt to us 2 weeks after his birth. I have a theory about the first year. As you get further from labor day, time goes by FASTER. What do I mean? Well, the first couple days after Nico was born were AN ETERNITY! However here I am now, the night before Nico's 1 year Birthday...and I feel as if we were just celebrating his 10 month "birthday".

We have 17 guests that have RSVPed for the PIRATE PACHANGA...(5 of which were imported just for the special occasion- The Flores Abuelos, Abuelito Luis, Tia Kelly and Tio Josh).
I'm so excited for tomorrow!

This past year, nothing has been as expected...and everyday there are challenges to overcome and awesome moments to share together. Maybe because of my parents' struggles, but I am very aware of HOW lucky I am to have the CHANCE to me a MOMMY, and I am SO thankful for my little MIRACLE!!!!

I want to end this by saying...
Dear Nico,
In a couple hours, you will have been part of our family for ONE WHOLE YEAR! I guess we did a pretty good job! There were times that I was definitly worried us, but we made it through. I REALLY LOVE YOU MORE EVERYDAY. Thank you for making my life so complete. I look forward to seeing you grow up into the cool little man that you are shaping up to be. I want you to know that I love you more than you can EVER IMAGINE---and then MORE than that!
Te AMO MI REY!

love,
Mommy
.

Your party is going to be GREAT!

A mommy money struggle

Unfortunately money makes the world go round. If you're not making it, your not contributing, your not productive, your not happy...but that's not necessarily so. Yes its stressful to be tight on money...but more money sometimes means bigger expenses and more headaches. Unless your filthy rich, money is always going to be tight. We will always find SOMETHING BIGGER, SOMETHING MORE EXPENSIVE that we want.

I've been living this tug of war (work or no work) for a while. I probably sound like a broken record. This is more of an EXTERNAL tug of war. I feel that "JUST" being a mom is NOT OKAY. BUT what can be more important right now that making a difference in the 1 life that NEEDS me more than ANYONE or ANYTHING else in the world.

I know it's important to and necessary, especially in an expensive city like LOS ANGELES for both of us to work, BUT it's SOO tricky. How do you put a PRICE tag or a VALUE amount on the WORTH of your time away from your MOST PRIZED POSSESSION.
I really don't think

Maybe it's just me. Actually, I know it's not just me. Some working moms think that this is the EASY option but neither one is easier than the other (working mom or Stay-at-home mom). And the grass is greener on the other side rule definitely seems to apply here. Moms at home think it would be nice to have that added income, nice plus to have adult conversations, and be "productive". But most working moms that I've met (Austin friends) would switch their extra hours, bonuses, and what nots, just to spend more time with their little munchskins, to see their "FIRSTS", to simply spend more time with them. Both working and SAHMies make HUGE sacrifices. I feel that I've had the LUXURY (that a lot of women don't have) of choosin the path that gives Motherhood that special place that it deserves IN MY LIFE, for each person it's different. If only mommies could get paid to WORK with our babies, or get raises for BEING AWESOME MOMS, this whole tug-of-war would be over.

There is one thing for CERTAIN: I have the rest of my life to work...and in a couple years, NICO will be TOO BUSY to hang out with me anyway. SO I must say this....while I find a job that is financially worth me GIVING UP AMAZING TIME with NICO, I am going to enjoy every minute and not let this NEGATIVE PRESSURE CLOUD rain down on my parade. I love the chaos in my life, I love the gabbering baby heads I get to see, and especially, I love not knowing what each day will bring.

In conclusion: I know that I will be great at a 9-5 job one day...but right now I'm busy...super busy being AWESOME at this 24/7 job I was SO LUCKY to get hired for! I get paid peanuts (and slobbery kisses) but then again, at least I HAVE a job in this crazy job market-lol.

Weekend stuff

Awesome weekend with one little GLITCH.

Saturday we ran with LA Distance Club on Santa Monica. Nico behaved great on the run and the morning was BEAUTIFUL. The ocean smelled GREAT!!! To end the run off, we went for Crepes on the Promenade!!!
We organized and looked up bike trailers on craigslist the rest of the day until we found one!

Sunday we went to Mass at St. Mark's Church. We hadn't been to Mass since Nico's Baptism in Colombia--It's not a BIG church but they had a really cool baby cry area right next to the alter. We were really happy that with the church, and it was pretty close to our place....BUT then, something happened. The thing that keeps a lot of people from going to church, the thing that makes Peter REALLY NOT LIKE going to mass, the thing that REALLY BOTHERS ME. After the homily, the head pastor of the church came out from no where and started giving his own little homily. At first I was like, aww how nice, he's talking about how we are all a Family and we are all here for each other...but as he kept going, I started suspecting that he was up to something. And thats when he dropped the M-bomb. He asked to MONEY in the MIDDLE OF MASS!!! For about 15 minutes (did I mention-in the middle of mass), he asked people to not be indifferent and just give $1, he asked for people to have their donation be a reflection of WHO THEY ARE-what does that even mean? He asked people to not just give a dollar. He asked for the equivalent of a gallon of gas ($3 minimum per person). He said that the church was our family and we had to give a percentage of what we have. However he was nice about it, he gave us until next week to "think about" how much we really can afford to give. At this point I almost wanted to walk out.
I'm pretty sure God, upstairs, wasn't too ecstatic that his MASS TIME was being used to GUILT people into GIVING MONEY. I'm pretty sure Jesus was all about GIVING, NOT TAKING!

I'm sorry if I seem angry with all the CAPS and exclamation marks, but REALLY CHURCH, is there a need to do it in the MIDDLE of mass. Because it's not like this Pastor guy didn't ask for MONEY at the end of mass. At the end there was another GUILT TRIP for all the parishioners

Fortunately we went on a long Bike ride with Nico in his new TRAILER and had a great time. I was able to put the MORNING behind me. We had lunch on the Promenade with Charlie, who joined us on the ride. We made a couple stops but ended up riding 15 miles, Not bad for Nico's first day out RIGHT! What a champ!

Nico is a Toddler TODAY!

I opened my email this morning to find an email from Emfamil saying:

Keep the Good Nutrition GoingLearn More
Congratulations, Valeria!

It's official, your little one is now a toddler! As she enters this exciting new stage, her capabilities and nutritional needs will change–and so will her taste preferences. Like most toddlers, she may become pickier about what she eats.

To help ensure she continues to get the nutrition for healthy development, make the move to Enfagrow™ PREMIUM™ Toddler. It's nutrition tailored for toddlers and has:
Vitamin C to aid in the production of bone, teeth and skin.
Iron which is part of healthy blood cells and helps carry oxygen throughout the body.
Vitamin E which acts as an antioxidant to help protect the cell from damage.
Omega–3 DHA which milk lacks.

I guess this means its official, Nico is now a toddler if Emfamil says he is...lol!

Yes...Beach in January!

Today we went for a stroll on the BEACH in the afternoon. It was a beautiful day, so I couldn't pass up the the opportunity. And i'm glad we did, cause we had so much fun on the beach!

From 1101 Nico on Beach
"MOM, this is Awesome! I love sand...who invented it? Can I take it home? Please!?!?!"
From 1101 Nico on Beach
Nico had a lot of fun EXPLORING and discovering all the HIDDEN treasures in Pacific coast sand box!
The beach looked so peaceful. The tide was really low...so the sand was hard packed, perfect for running...too bad moving the stroller on the sand was so hard, if not I would have tried to run a little.

We left as the sun started going to bed, the cold just rolled right in as the sun rolled out.

We came home to find that the 3 Kings had brought us MORE CHRISTMAS GIFTS!! Nico got his chu-chu train and a toy story 3 (record-a-book). Daddy got some long sleeve button downs, boxers, and magazines. I got 2 beautiful journals and a notebook, Plumeria lotion, and some candles and candy canes!
Thank you Vivi and Abuelo!

Mega Million reality check

The Mega Million played tonight for 355 MILLON DOLLARS! I never buy lotto tickets, but tonight I went out and got some. I knew that the chances were about slim to none to win anything....but a part of me couldn't help but imagine how AWESOME it would be to win...even 1/2 or 1/500 of jackpot.
Thinking about everything that I would do if we won...made me a little teary-eyed when I saw the actual winning numbers...It was almost as if all those possibilities vanished in the blink of an eye. I know it's silly but I really wish I would have won SOMETHING!

Thing is, I know there are millions of people out there tonight that felt the same way...and will wake up tomorrow to the same life as the day before. Difference with me is...I know I didn't win all these millions but I guess it wouldn't be fair to the rest of the world if we not only had the most beautiful baby, handsom husband, apartment near the beach, AND WON THE LOTTO...Not fair---I get it....but I still played, lol.

Work search has been fruitless here in LA. I've started working with Berlitz, the language Center that I worked for in Austin, teaching spanish...but as of right now, the schedule is ALL OVER THE PLACE. I'm looking for a more consistent job, with regular hours... Ideally part-time doing something INTERESTING!

However, it's not like the job search is even my biggest struggle....FINDING someone to take care of Nico has been the hardest so far. None of the 8 daycares we have called in the area have openings. The soonest possible spot is believed to open sometime in summer 2011. Most of the schools don't even have spots for DAYCARE TOURS for a couple months! This is ridiculous. I guess you really do have to sign up for preschool and school before you even think about having a baby!?!?! And lets not even discuss how expensive these mini-harvard institutions are---definitely more than any normal, non-lottery winning, single-working parent family can afford! I know we'll find something-ONE DAY!

I hope I'm not addicted to this lotto thing...like my grandfather...who bought a lotto ticket almost every day of his life...and NEVER WON ANYTHING, lol. We'll see who the lucky jerk is who won all these millions---not jealous. At all.
