Our friends Laurel and Tim are living in Malaysia. I've written on here a lot about them. Tim's job got them transfered out there when Miles was 6 months old. When they get back next summer....they will have 2 little ones! Reading Laurel's blog reminded me of ALL THE THINGS I missed out on while being in Panama, completely oblivious to being preggers for 18 weeks. She is now about 14 weeks and is starting to see the light at the end of the treacherous 1st trimester tunnel she was in.

Feliz Cumpleanos Daddy!!!
End of June Update, Sam and Patricia Visit and Nico and Ana, too
We have just had SOOO much going on that there has been NO TIME for reflecting or writing!
Thursday:
We got our bike stolen from our parking garage---THAT HAD A LOCK! I hope whoever took it is feeling the wrath of BAD KARMA.
In the evening, when Sam and Patricia got home from visiting Pomona-- a small liberal arts college that SAM absolutely loved, and Peter got home from surfing, we had a bbq here at the apt with Kenny and his cousin (chilly).
Saturday:
I went to take my FBI Linguist test (part 1 of stage 2 in the hiring process). It was LONG! My hand felt like it was going to FALL OFF! But I hope that I did well. I will find out in 3 weeks how I did and if I passed to Part 2 of stage 2--which is the speaking assessment.
While I was translating away in a mysterious Federal Building, Daddy put up the surf rack up in the living room, which we had been working on all week.
He and Nico also went to the Getty Museum with Sam and Patricia---who LOVED IT!
When I got home from my test, Peter and I biked to the Beach with some friends, Brittney Love, Ryan, Charlie, and Mandy while Patricia and Sam took care of Nico. It was definitely summer in Santa Monica/Venice! Everyone and their mommas were out there getting some sun, whether it was running, biking, walking, tanning, playing volleyball, drinking, tourisiting-new word, or whatever else they could think of. I'm so glad we biked! If we had to drive, I probably would never go to the beach in the summer. We played some volleyball and then watched the USA vs MEXICO soccer game---where we decided to stay out at ( an Irish Pub)....we had SO MUCH FUN---I felt like a kid again, lol.
Sunday:
Sam and Patricia left to the airport...for the flight they thought that sam had but it was really Monday.
Peter, Nico and I went to a Stand up paddle board race in our marina!
Nico and Ana arrived as surprise visitors. A little after they arrived, Nico (mine) was saying ANA!! Can you believe it???!??!?!?!
We went to a BBQ with Friends here in the complex which was baby central, haha (poor ana and nico) At the party, our neighbor started blowing bubbles to the kids....and guess what Nico did....HE SAID BUBBBLEEEEE!!!!!!
Monday Morning, I went on an 8.25 mile run with Ana and her Nico. I gave them a running tour of Venice and Santa Monica. It was so nice to be running--stride for stride(for the first half, lol) with old friends, catching up on life, showing off my new home.
In the afternoon, we went to the 3rd Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier ( Ana and my Nico). Nico got on his first Faris Wheel!!!He didn't really know what to make of it. At first he and I were both scared, then we distracted him and he might have started not hating it as much.
Today:
Gym with mom friend and then on a 6.5 mile run with Ana, Peter, and my Nico
After our run, Ana gave Nico(my nico) breakfast and then he kindly returned the favor and fed Tia Ana all her Mango.

A Stronger Me---A stronger you!
Yesterday and today I took a CPR course. There was a pregnant mom there. She was due in 3 weeks, she had so many questions about the infant CPR and she was very nervous. It seems like it was SOOO long ago that I was there where she was a couple weeks away from delivery, with so many questions about HOW my new life would be...if I would know what to do, if I would be a good mom, if I would ever get back in shape, if I would sleep through my baby's crying, if I would be able to handle it. And there I was tonight...seemingly an all knowing being, since I have a 17 month old with so much 'wisdom' to share and so 'calm'. It reminded me of some things i've been thinking about lately.
A couple weeks ago I started training to be a Mommy BootCamp instructor. One of the things I LOVE about the woman who started this is that she wants to empower moms. In the time since my training began, I feel that I've noticed a change in my mood, in my confidence, my body, and self-consciousness--about "not-working" and feeling down when others suggest that I should DO MORE to support my family financially. When baby makes three, it's not always easy to make those decisions of whether or not to go back to work and whether or not it makes sense to do so considering the costs of childcare.
Throughout my bootcamp sessions I want to remind my mommy bootcampers that you are not WORTH more or LESS because of the amount of money that you make. Just because a person doesn't get a paycheck for what they do, doesn't mean that their work is not valuable nor that they don't do anything. I feel that my "work" is good, right for me, and SOMETHING very important...even now that I haven't received a single paycheck to be an instructor. I think a person's worth should be measured by QUALITY OF their LIFE, their POSITIVE CONTRIBUTIONS to their surrounding world, and HOW HAPPY THEY ARE. And though daily TO-DO lists often feel like an endless roman decree, MOMMY TIME TO WORKOUT should be somewhere close to the TOP--even if it's hard somedays.
Bread winner or not I want to continue to work hard at teaching others to be WINNERS in their lives whether it's being that encouraging friend or that minute counter that's helping them sculpt their bodies, and pushing them to dig deep to find that 'INNER ME'.
Nico and I are excited to start my boot camp in September here in Marina del Rey. I feel that I will be a great instructor and that the moms I meet will feel STRONGER, TOUGHER, and HAPPIER when they leave our sessions. I want to help them emerge from the shadows that they have slowly started to blend in to.

Where is our summer?
In Austin the high is about as hot as a bikram yoga room (105 degrees) today.
Here...however, it is a rainy, gloomy, 61 degrees outside right now! There goes my idea of fanning myself, tanning and drinking mimosas by the pool all summer with all my mommy friends who also don't do anything =)...you ladies know who you are.
OhhhhH well....now we have to do our FUN FRIDAY ACTIVITY INDOORS with our kiddos to help them develop there fine motor skills, social skills, sharing skills, language skills among SO MANY OTHER THINGS.

17 months old!
Until I started writing this post, I was convinced that Nico was turning 16 months today....BUT he is 17months old! He is one month away from being 1 year and a 1/2!!!!
So many things have happend. His vocabulary has continued to expand and his ability to do things 'on his own' (tear) have continued to increase.
Motor Skills- We have added more signs to hig vocab list!! He signs for LECHE, MAS, DIAPER, CHANGE, LAVA, POOP, and now:
Thank you, and Comida
Language skills- I had to think hard about this one for a couple days since there are so many words now. Here's his list:
Uhh-Ohh
Ball
Car
Mama
Papa/Dada
Agua
Tu-Tu (Train)
Wau-wau (dog)
cookie
Tia (sometimes)
Gra-dad
GO HEAT-Abuelo flores taught him
Cool- Abuelo flores taught him
Yesterday he said (1) Hi to someone as we walked by them on the way to the laundry room and waved at the same time. This morning at the pediatricians office a baby in a car seat walked in. Nico pointed and said (2) BABY! It was so EXCITING!!!
Other things he can understand, communicate, or DO:
High Five
Fist pump
touch down
clap
wave bye-bye and hello
Close clips or buckles (on the ergo, hiking bag, or anything with a buckle---vivi taught him that
Sleeping habits: As with everything else with kids...sleep routines are all in the GREY AREA. All we know is that kids need sleep....but how long, when, should they cry, should they put themselves to sleep, should they sleep through the night, should they BLAH BLAH BLAH (the list goes on)...is all subjective and depends on the parents and on the individual child.
We've been keeping track of his sleep for about 2 months now and feel that it has help the 3 of us a lot. We are not where we want to be YET but are working our way there at our own pace. It's been difficult with visitors to keep a consistent sleep schedule since we are usually out and about or he is very excited about COOL things during the day that we have done or exciting dinner times, but Nico has done great.
I have been wanting to put up curtains in Nico's room for a couple weeks now and we finally got around to it on Monday evening----GUESS WHAT? Nico slept through the night monday and last night....Last night it took peter 3mins to put him to bed and he actually slept from 8:04pm to 8:27am!!!! I can't say that it's solely due to the new environment in the room...but I think that is has a LOT to do with it. I hope this continues =).
Eating habits: We have been going back and forth with gerber foods and home made foods but he is doing really well....EATING A LOT! When he chews, he makes me want to bite him!!!
Other updates:
I need to walk around with NEOSPORIN strapped to me! These days he seems like he is getting hurt every 5 minutes. The last couple days Nico has had one accident after another. Whether it’s bumping his head on the floor or against something in our apt, busting his gum open by falling on his sippy cup, or chasing a ball in our complex and face planting and scraping his face. I know he's a boy and I have to toughen up to prepare myself for the injuries to come...but Nico is my life...and that being said...I think its understandable when I’m shocked and scared when things happen to him. Sometimes I scream for Peter (as if he can FIX everything and make it all better) but lately, I’ve been trying to figure things out myself (and failed...lol). Sometimes I mistake calmness for lack of care....but calmness I know is essential to figuring out the “best Plan of Action” without making things worse.....which reminds me of a quote that I read some time ago:
Life is 10% what happens to you, 90% how you react to it.I feel that now I have to modify that quote...when children are involved...
Life turns into 10% what happens to them, 5% what happens to you, 15% how others react around you, and 100 % HOW YOU REACT AND HANDLE IT ALL.

Peter got out early and we went to Mother's Beach to use the Stand UP paddle board in the Marina and ate at CheeseCake Factory.
Thursday: we biked to Music Time at the Cow's End for some crowded and hot kids music time. When we got out, we biked to the Santa Monica Pier and won a whole bunch of FREE STUFF from Hawaiian Tropic.

At nearly 270,000 acres, Tejon Ranch is the largest continuous expanse of private land in California. Its 422 square miles make it almost as large as the City of Los Angeles and about 40% the size of Rhode Island. The Ranch is located along Interstate 5, approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Bakersfield.
Tejon Ranch was founded in 1843 as a Mexican land grant. In the decades that followed, the Ranch grew in size as additional land grants were purchased by Tejon’s founder, General Edward Fitzgerald Beale, a historic figure in early California. The 270,000–acre Ranch is now the principal asset of the Tejon Ranch Company, which was incorporated in 1936. The Company’s stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “TRC.”
